A dream match for the ages finally culminated at Money in the Bank, where we saw 'The Phenomenal' AJ Styles take on 'The Franchise' John Cena. Both competitors had the fans eating out of the palm of their hands and in a bout that went back and forth, but an interference by The Club members Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson provided AJ Styles with the ability to cinch in a win against John Cena. The match was met with much controversy but no matter how it ended, AJ Styles still picked up the victory.

WWE wrestling men’s champion AJ Styles is used to shrugging off the haters, experience that served him well as he donned a Collingwood jersey at the MCG on Sunday. Women’s champion Carmella thought the jersey matched her outfit best but remained upbeat while being saddled with the navy blue of cellar-dwellers Carlton.

Pacing the hallowed turf, wrestling’s reigning royalty were eyeing the empty seats that would be filled within hours by Magpies and Blues fans. Styles vowed that despite the stadium’s size, it would be overflowing with up to 100,000 “crazy” fans for the WWE ‘Super Show-Down’ on October 6, just one week after the 2018 AFL grand final.

“This isn’t something we’re taking lightly, we’re bringing some hall-of-famers, we’re going to tear the house down,” he said.

The showdown will be the WWE’s first Melbourne stadium show in 16 years, when the Global Warning event at Etihad Stadium in 2002 drew more than 56,000 people to a card headlined by a Triple Threat match between The Rock, Triple H, and Brock Lesnar. October’s card will feature the largest WWE roster ever to appear in Australia, including the final bout between long-time arch-rivals Triple H and The Undertaker. A sell-out would hurtle the event into the record books as one of history’s largest-ever wrestling crowds.

With seats priced at up to $2000 per ticket, fans will be expecting an extravaganza. Up to 500 crew members will spend four days setting up 50 semi-trailers worth of equipment. Proceedings will then be beamed live to a worldwide audience of millions of fans across up to 180 countries in 24 languages. While still relatively small in Australia, WWE has more than 900 million social media followers and is the second-most viewed channel in the world. Carmella said the event will be a buzz for fans and wrestlers alike. “Just being here right now, looking around and seeing all these empty seats, the thought of being in the ring and having all of these seats full, it’s just going to be so cool – I know fans here are like no other.”

Tickets go on sale on Thursday via ticketek.com.au
